Now, we’ll break this up a little bit and take a look at the first 24 hours of release…

  • More than 3.5 million copies had been sold

So, 4.7 million gamers around the world were poised to storm Sanctuary on day 1 of Diablo III’s release — representing the biggest PC-game launch in history.

Do you think means that 1.6 million bought it even with the massive publicity of the always on DRM and server issues after launch? Or that they were giving the servers time to calm down? Or both?

I believe anyone who can’t decide whether or not to buy the game due to the DRM is silly. That being said, I don’t think there are many who would have avoided purchasing D3 due to the DRM. I think it’s all down to word of mouth, money issues, getting out to the store to buy it etc, maybe towards the weekend. There must be quite a majority working who though, what’s the point in preordering or purchasing right after release when they have no time to play the game. I think server issues would additionally have a minor effect.
